The Season of Giving, Kindness, and Love.....

By: Heidi Vail

I contemplated the article for December for quite some time. Then it came to me while I was cooking (of course!)...

I was preparing meals this morning for an elderly Aunt that broke her arm. I was happy preparing that food for her; knowing how easy it would make things for her and how much she would enjoy it.

Someone close to me decided (five years after a major heartbreak -- staying single that entire length of time) that it was time to love again. He’s lost weight and got healthy. He decided to join an online dating service. My advice to him in writing his profile was to think about what he had to give to a relationship; what he was willing to do for another rather then what he wanted or was looking for. When you give and do nice things, it comes back to you....

Someone else close to me is having what some would call “a midlife crisis”. My advice to her is to count her blessings! Love what she has, give of her heart, and stop focusing on the wants, the needs and the things she doesn't have. The grass is rarely greener on the other side. Being grateful, appreciative and loving warms the heart and spreads like wildfire...

Years ago my grandchildren asked me one day what I was doing. I said I was working on my Christmas list. They wanted to see the list and asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I replied that I was working on my giving list. The things I wanted to do and make and give to the people I loved cared for. Focusing on the giving rather then what you want or think you need is truly what the spirit of Christmas is all about. So now it’s the lists we write together every year.

I’ve been asked many times over the years why I have been so successful in the catering business (it’s been nearly thirty years now!!). Well, catering is all about giving: of yourself, the product and having a genuine passion to serve and CATER to others.

When you cook a meal, throw a party (or hire someone to do it for you), it is an expression of love and a gift of celebration. It says “I care about you, I enjoy your company and I want you to be part of this special time.”

May the spirit of the holidays shine bright for you this season!
