Fun in the Neighborhood!

By, Heidi Vail

It’s really not hard to be a good neighbor. I know we don’t always have a warm-fuzzy with all our neighbors but feeling happy and safe where you live comes with just a little kindness. Yes, we are all busy with our lives but a simple wave, putting in someone’s trash can, a shared meal, a Bundt cake or hosting a neighborhood tea will do the trick. There are five or six kids within a block of my house; mostly girls. We have become pals. They stop by to see my puppy, Belle, almost daily.

My husband says they are really there to play with me. Sometimes they just watch me cook. I taught the girls how to climb trees, jump rope, and most recently how to enjoy a proper English tea. I invited their moms and grandmas to come along too. We started out by making tea hats. Then we sat to enjoy our tea. Lovely tea sandwiches, warm scones with jam, lemon curd, Devonshire cream and the petite sweets. We talked about etiquette and manners and simply being polite. The three generations of women loved it. It was a very nice afternoon.

One doesn’t have to know how to cook to host a party. My company, Heidi’s Events and Catering, has menus for all sorts of occasions. They also have vintage China, table linens, tables, chairs and very nice people to serve and clean everything up.

What’s the saying? “A little kindness goes a long way!”
